Lawn measurement software: measuring a lawn from an address
Lawn measurement software turns a street address into the square footage of the lawn, measured on satellite and aerial imagery instead of with a measuring wheel. Here is how it works, what else it can measure, who uses it, and what to check before you quote from the number.
What lawn measurement software does
You give it an address. It finds the property on overhead imagery, outlines the grass, leaves out the house, driveway, walks, patio and beds, and adds up what is left. The answer is the lawn's square footage, with a picture of the outline so you can see what was counted.
People search for this under a lot of names: lawn measuring software, a lawn measuring tool, satellite lawn measurement, auto measure lawn, or a lawn size calculator. They are not quite the same thing.
| Tool | What you give it | What you get back |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn size calculator | Lengths and widths you measured yourself | The area of the shapes you typed in |
| Map tracing (Google Earth, Google Maps) | Your own clicks around the edge of the lawn | The area of the shape you drew |
| County or Zillow lot size | The address | The whole parcel, house and paving included |
| Lawn measurement software | The address | The lawn traced for you, with its square footage and what it left out |
How measuring a lawn from an address works
- Type the address. There is nothing to draw and no one has to drive out.
- The software finds the property. It locates the property on overhead imagery and, where the county has a record, the lot line.
- It outlines the grass. It traces the lawn in the front and back and leaves out the house, driveway, walks, patio and beds.
- It adds up the square footage. It reports the square footage of the lawn, and of the front and back separately.
- You check it and quote. Look over the outline on the picture, drag any edge that is off, and price from the number.
The last step matters. Any number measured from imagery is a first pass to check, not a survey. Good software shows you exactly what it counted so the check is a glance, not a redo.
Beyond the lawn: driveways, sidewalks and paving
The same imagery shows the hard surfaces, so some tools measure those too. In Clarity Measure you pick them under What to measure, with or without the lawn, in the same search at the same price:
- Driveways, from the garage or parking pad to the street, including the apron to the curb.
- Sidewalks and walkways, the private walks and the public sidewalk along the street. The public sidewalk is measured on its own and never counted as the customer's ground.
- Parking lots and patios, and other paving.
You can also choose the front, the back or both, and whether the strip between the sidewalk and the curb counts with the front lawn.
Who uses it
- Mowing and lawn care companies price mowing from the lawn's square footage without a site visit. See lawn measuring for mowing companies.
- Fertilizer and weed control companies quote a rate per 1,000 square feet from the turf, not the lot. See lawn square footage for fertilizer quotes.
- Snow removal companies measure driveways, sidewalks and parking lots. See driveway measuring for snow removal.
- Pressure washing companies quote driveways, walkways and patios by the square foot.
- Landscaping companies size up lawns and hard surfaces for a bid.
What to look for in lawn measuring software
- It measures the lawn, not the lot. The house, paving and beds should come out of the number, and the picture should show that they did.
- You can fix an outline. Every tool misses an edge sometimes. Dragging a corner is faster than starting over.
- Front and back separately. Plenty of customers only want one of them done.
- The other surfaces you quote. If you do snow or pressure washing, check that driveways and sidewalks are included and what they cost.
- Price at your volume. Work out the monthly cost at the number of properties you actually measure.
- It fits how quotes reach you. A quote form on your website, a connection to your software, or an AI assistant that can measure for you.
Tools in this group include Deep Lawn, Aspire's PropertyIntel (which replaced Go iLawn), SiteRecon, Attentive.ai and Clarity Measure. Our Go iLawn alternatives guide compares what several of them cost, with sources.
Where measuring from imagery goes wrong
Heavy tree cover hides the grass under it. Imagery can be older than the last landscaping job. Where two yards run together with no fence, bed or walk between them, nothing in the picture says where one ends. Corner lots have more street frontage and often two curb strips. When any of these apply, look harder at the outline before you quote. How to measure a lawn's square footage goes into each one, and lot size vs lawn size shows why the county number is the wrong one to price from.
Measuring a lawn with Clarity Measure
Clarity Measure is lawn measurement software for United States addresses. What it can measure at an address depends on the imagery and county records available there. You can use it four ways:
- In the web workspace. Type an address, pick what to measure, and review the result on the imagery.
- From a quote form on your website. Each request that comes in is measured, and your Inbox shows a quote worked out from your own prices for you to check and send.
- Through the REST API, from your own software, on Pro and Pro Plus.
- Through MCP, so an AI assistant such as Claude, or any other MCP client, can measure an address for you, on Pro and Pro Plus. The documentation shows how to connect.
It does not measure trees or shrubs yet, and it does not connect to a lawn care CRM on its own yet.
